I was walking by a CrossFit gym in Vancouver today and I noticed the following message on their door:
Try CrossFit, You’ll Love It!
As soon as I saw that message, I immediately thought of an LA Times article I read many years ago where Greg Glassman (the fat guy that created CrossFit) said that 80% of the people who try CrossFit at his gym don’t stick with it (translation: those people clearly didn’t love CrossFit).
That article is from 2006, so it’s possible that although 80% of people who tried CrossFit at CrossFit headquarters in 2006 did not like CrossFit enough to stick with it, now, 6 years later in 2012, most people love it for some unknown reason. But I call bullshit on that theory. Today, just like 6 years ago, most people who try CrossFit will hate it.
But I still think you should try CrossFit because you might fall into that small percentage of people who passionately love it. I’ve found that most people who try CrossFit end up feeling extremely strongly about it one way or another. They either love it or hate it. No grey area whatsoever.
With that being said, here’s what the message posted on the door of the Vancouver CrossFit gym should read:
Try CrossFit. There’s an 80% chance you’ll passionately despise it, but there’s a small chance you might love it, so for that reason, it’s definitely worth trying. Just be extremely fucking careful regarding rhabdomyolysis.
